Scraping and Burning
Scraping and Burning
Scraping and burning, medically known as curettage and electrodesiccation, is a common surgical procedure used to remove various types of skin lesions, including basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and certain precancerous lesions.
The procedure involves two main steps: curettage and electrodesiccation. During the curettage phase, the dermatology provider uses a curette, a spoon-shaped instrument, to scrape and remove the abnormal tissue. This process helps remove the bulk of the lesion. Next, electrodesiccation is performed, where an electric current is applied to the area to burn and destroy any remaining abnormal cells and to control bleeding.
Scraping and burning is a relatively quick procedure that can be performed under local anesthesia in the dermatology provider’s office. The wound typically heals without the need for sutures, and a scab will form, which will eventually fall off, leaving behind new, healthy skin.
The procedure may cause some discomfort, redness, and swelling, which are temporary and resolve over time. The recovery period is relatively short, and patients can usually resume their normal activities within a few days.
At the California Dermatology Institute, our dermatology providers are highly skilled in performing scraping and burning procedures. We will evaluate your specific condition, provide a thorough examination, and determine if this procedure is suitable for you. Our goal is to provide safe and effective treatment, ensuring the best possible outcomes for our patients.
