Actinic Keratosis
Actinic Keratosis
Actinic keratosis, also known as solar keratosis, is a precancerous skin condition that develops as a result of long-term exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or tanning beds. It typically appears as rough, scaly patches on sun-exposed areas such as the face, scalp, ears, arms, and hands. Actinic keratosis is most commonly seen in fair-skinned individuals, although it can affect people of all skin types.
At the California Dermatology Institute, our dermatology providers specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of actinic keratosis. We offer a range of effective actinic keratosis treatment options to address this condition and reduce the risk of it progressing to skin cancer.
Actinic keratosis treatment may include cryotherapy (freezing the lesions with liquid nitrogen), topical medications, or surgical interventions for more advanced cases. Our dermatology providers will carefully evaluate your skin and discuss the most appropriate treatment approach based on the location, number, and severity of the lesions.
In addition to treatment, our actinic keratosis dermatologist will provide thorough education on sun protection and skin cancer prevention strategies. This may include the proper use of sunscreen, protective clothing, and regular skin checks to detect any suspicious changes early.
